Rev. Canon Robert John E.F.B. (Jack) Black R.I.P.

Dundalk Grammar School wishes to express their deepest sympathy to the family of the Rev. Canon Robert John E.F.B. (Jack) Black who died unexpectedly on Tuesday September 18th 2018.

Following the sudden death of the Reverend A. J. Bart Finnamore, Canon Black was appointed Headmaster of Dundalk Grammar School from 1984 to 1996, and then Headmaster of Kilkenny College.

Canon Black is accredited for dramatically increasing the number of students within the school, and the installation of the first ever floodlit Astroturf in Louth as well as expanding the range of subjects and specialist rooms offered by the school. The present day Swan building was also built largely with funds acquired by Canon Black from the Department of Education. Canon Black was the last Headmaster to live in Hanbidge House, along with his wife Ollie (Aldarilla) and their children Richard, Andrea and Nicole, who attended the school.

By the end of Canon Black’s stewardship Dundalk Grammar School had become a vibrant and successful school achieving considerable accolades in the various fields of academic, sport, culture and music.

Many members of our staff today remember Jack with great fondness and respect.
