U-16 DGS Boys Soccer team narrowly lose out

Dundalk Grammar School's U-16 soccer team came very close to making the FAI U-16 Leinster Division Two final on Wednesday 16th March 2011.  In the semi-final match, played in ALSAA near Dublin airport, the DGS boys narrowly lost 2-0 to St Aidan's CS from Tallaght.

While missing two key players through injury (Josh Arrowsmith and Ciaran O'Connor) DGS started the brighter of the two teams and should have taken the lead twice in the first ten minutes, as first 14 year old Emmett Kirk hit the post with a great shot and then Karl McDonnell curled a free kick against the bar.  St Aidan's came into the game and took the lead against the run of play just before half time when Dundalk goalkeeper Gavin Douglas was very unlucky to see his clearance hit the St Aidan's striker and roll into the Dundalk goal.  Douglas had to make some quality saves to keep Dundalk in the tie thereafter.

Dundalk came out after half time and pinned St Aidan's back in their half for most of the second half, but despite all the pressure some good saves and a lack of luck, no equaliser arrived.  Injury time saw Dundalk punished again by a late breakaway goal.  The disappointment was obvious at the final whistle but the boys can be proud to have achieved so much this year, picking up the Grammar school's second ever FAI schoolboys title with their North East Division Two win.
