Senior Boys win Leinster League Thriller!
On Tuesday the 22nd of March, the school's senior hockey team faced formidable opponents, High School of Rathgar, in the final of the Leinster League. The King's Hospital in Palmerstown played host to an epic decider that determined the winner of this Senior B league competition.
From the start DGS put the south Dublin school under intense pressure and, after five high tempo minutes, David De Loughry tapped in the opening goal . High School reacted fast and from a short winner put the ball in the back of the net. The game was now evenly balanced at one goal a piece. The team responded and pushed forward with Philip Rowntree, Simon McKeever and Ireland team representative, Andrew Shekleton, all coming close to giving Dundalk an advantage. Down at the other end, the DGS defence was strong, with Paul Woolfson making great saves on two occasions to keep the opposition at bay.
After a short break, the two teams re-emerged for the second half : the next 35 minutes would determine the winner. The High School scored a quick goal and shortly afterwards, very nearly added another goal from a short corner.
In the final 20 minutes, the Dundalk team pushed forward. This heavy pressure paid off when Robert Carr slid in to finish off an Andrew Shekleton cross, bringing the score to 2-2. The final 10 minutes saw both teams come close to snatching the win. However, in the closing stages of the game, Philip Rowntree dribbled into the High School penalty area and after a goal-mouth frenzy knocked in a scrappy, but decisive, winning goal.
The boys would like to extend their thanks to Mr. S. Nowell and Mr. J. Gregg for their continued coaching and advice. Over the last five years, this team has never lost a single league match.
