League Champions 2 Years in a Row!
Dundalk Grammar: 2 Wilsons Hospital : 1
On Monday 28th of March 2011 the Junior girls hockey team met Wilsons Hospital school in the Meath league final. The match was played in Skerries on an astro-turf pitch, a surface with which the DGS girls are familiar. Within two minutes of the start, the Dundalk girls won a short corner although unfortuantely this did not lead to a goal. With about five minutes to half time, Wilsons saw a break in the DGS defence, got into the ‘D’ and scored.
The second half began with DGS trailing one nil and Wilsons defending well. However the Grammar girls clearly had only one thing on their minds: to bring this shield home! With five minutes remaining they got a break and Sarah Rowntree put the team back in the game. The match was now tied and it looked likely that a painful and nail-biting period of extra time beckonen.
However Elizabeth Flood put an end to the team's worries when, with only thirty seconds left on the clock, she scored the winning goal to bring an end to a most exciting game of hockey. The DGS captain paid tribute to the Wilsons girls who had played well, fought hard and showed grace and poise under pressure.
As for the team from Dundalk Grammar their passing was strategic and thought out but their passion and drive could not be quenched. It is also worth mentioning that this Junior team is solely made up of third year girls and they have played this season against girls that have often had a whole year of experience and strength above them.
To finish the hockey season with the title is truly an achievement. Congratulations to the girls from the Grammar and as for next year, how about three in a row?
-Ms R. Eveson (coach)
